Training Days – Injury Update

So far so good, but it’s a long road back. After newsletter #2 was sent early last week, I completed a full training night on Thursday – my Tri-Thursday where I undertook a 1km swim, 9km ride, and 7.5km run. All felt right during and after the exercise, but on Friday I pulled up quite sore.

I decided to take an extra rest day on Saturday, which helped, but the pain in the achilles was still there.

Nevertheless, come Sunday morning, I hit the ground running for my long run. Even as I left the house I was debating if I should just do a short run, but me being me, once I was running, I couldn’t stop until I’d done my full route.

Throughout the 21kms I felt very little pain. In fact it all felt great! One of my better runs of late. Post run, however, I was in a fair bit of pain. Yesterday, a little better. Today a little bit better again. So, I’m improving, but the slowness of this recovery is proving VERY frustrating!!!

Sushi Friday!

Another week, another Sushi Friday! But why sushi on a Friday? What’s it got to do with Project Fuji? Other than the obvious fact that Japan is where sushi came from.

Friday is my recovery day, my rest day. No training, no exercise of any kind. I even take the escalators at the station on Sushi Fridays! I know, how slack of me!!

But it is well documented that your rest days are every bit important as your training days when you’re leading up to a big race. It is when your body repairs all it’s muscle damage that occurs when training and pushing your body to the limit.

That being said, what you eat on your recovery day is every bit as important as what you do. Your body needs the right nutrients to allow it best to recover. Raw fish, and in particular raw salmon has high omega 3 levels which aids in reducing inflammation – a horrible side affect of too much training!

So it’s off to my favorite sushi shop for some omega 3s!

Buy eating sushi on Friday does more than that. It also helps me re-establish my connection with Japan, with Christina’s memory, and helps me remember why I’m doing all of this. It keeps me focused week by week on what I’m doing and why. And I hope that everyone that is following me and supporting me will do the same.

So another week down. My injury is slowly recovering. My second newsletter went out. If you haven’t received the newsletter please visit the website and subscribe. I need all the support I can get!

Sushi Friday!

Ahhhh… now that is what sushi should look like!

It’s Sushi Friday again, and all is right in the world of cold wet slimy fish now that I’m back in Brisbane and have access once again to Top Sushi’s delectable Salmon Special.

I’ve just gulped it down – awash with sodium packed soy sauce and wasabi I might add – and breathed a nice big sigh of relief.

Not much has been going right for me this week in terms of training. My injury is getting me down. But at least now, I’m back on track with my Sushi.

Next week marks the end of Month 2 in the 6 Month campaign. Stay tuned for a newsletter with all the updates. Make sure you register your email with me here on this site as I won’t be forwarding my newsletters on on this occasion. And enjoy your sushi if you’re joining me today!

Training Day Report – Running for Pleasure / Running with Pain

With 2 successive weeks of 50kms plus I guess something had to give. Much to my surprise the left leg has let me down on this occasion.

Kings Park Run

A little over-excited when running in Kings Park, Perth, I found a nice little hill that was close to vertical called the Kakoda Track, which I proceeded to run up 4 times. What can I say, it seemed like a good idea at the time – great practice for Fuji and not to mention a great lot of fun. Unfortunately it came at a price – an Achilles strain.

Rottnest Island was too good a place not to run, unfortunately. So I put on my runners 2 days later and ran 16kms of hilly terrain. My Achilles felt fine until I stopped, where it proceeded to make my life hell!

Nothing a few Margaret River wines couldn’t fix! Of which I willingly consumed.

With 2 days rest and recovery, after 3 1/2 hours sleep I decided to partake in a little welcome back to Brissy run. 21kms later I was stiff and sore. And Sunday morning I could barely walk. I skipped

Sunday’s hill workout and promptly elected to go to the Physio at which time I was diagnosed with Achilles tendinitis and given ultrasound therapy and instructed to stretch. He didn’t tell me to stop running, however, which in my mind has danger all over it!

Hmmmm – I will see if I can contain myself tomorrow and do a ride- swim. Luckily it’s awful weather here in Brissy… just for a change!!! So, I think tonight is safe…

So, first injury of the campaign under my belt early. Thankfully I think I’ve caught it early…

Sushi Friday WA Style!

300 kms from civilization, in the middle of WA wine country – the land of fine food and drink but definitely not sushi – I had my work cut out for my this morning!

We set off early, Julia in the drivers seat, me the navigator, destination anywhere, anywhere that has sushi that is.

WA has plenty of fine seafood, don’t get me wrong. Indeed, I’ve been dining on fine WA fish nearly every night since I got here. I even forced Julia back to the same restaurant on Rottnest Island 2 nights in a row, and much to her disgust ordered the Snapper twice. But boy was it good! I even sampled a prawn taco at Vasse Felix yesterday that did not disappoint. Neither did the wine for that matter!!!

But sushi is another story. For sushi, Margaret River is devoid. So back towards Perth we went… However, it’s a long road of nothing back to Perth… and lunch came and went. Soon enough, we were famished, and needed lunch at all costs. So a quick turn off the highway to the coastal town of Mandura (a major city in WA speak). We found a Centro! All was looking good. We found a Sushi Place!

I was getting excited. I’d done it. I’d found sushi in s raw fish desert. And the place looked good. Like it’d give Top Sushi a run for it’s money! But alas, then I saw their Sushi range.

You can imagine my disappointment! Those Salmon pieces were the smallest slices of raw fish I’ve ever seen. And the rice was rectangular?!?! What’s with rectangular sushi?? And don’t even get me started on that random piece of Avacado?!?! It was t even ripe! But I sucked it up, and to background noise of Julia callininh me a Sushi snob, I ate what I’d found, taking solace in the fact I’d even managed to find anything over here.

So, that’s 7 weeks straight (only just!!) and all I can say is thank goodness it’s back to Top Sushi next week!!!

Sushi Friday

‘Sushi is like a winter’s night – cold, yet refreshing. It makes you feel alive!’

Yes, it’s that time of the week again. I’m off on my mad dash for sushi in between my training. I managed it last week (although, believe it or not, I nearly forgot to go and get it!!). Here I come, Top Sushi, have my fresh salmon ready for me!!!

I only hope everyones lunch brings them half as much joy as my sushi will me.

Sushi Friday!!!!

It’s Sushi Friday again and it’s going to be a mission today to get my raw fish! Currently undertaking training all this week, being a trainer, ones lunch break tends to be very brief – usually it’s spent following up questions (I wasn’t able to answer – yes I know it’s hard to believe but it’s true, I don’t have an answer for everything!) or madly doing prep for the afternoon.

But I’m determined, and as you’ll all agree if a marathoner is determined they’re probably going to do it! So come 12:30 today I am going to be sprinting like s madman through the streets of Brisbane all in the name of sushi and keeping to my promise!

I hope some of you will be joining me in this madness!

The Holy Grail so to speak!!!
